Carcassone

Having done justice to Montpellier, we decided to broaden our horizons by getting out of town for a day. We rented a car and headed off to the old medieval walled town of Carcassone. Once we'd worked our way past the shops and vendors (a kind of 11th Century Government Street), the town displayed some beauty, especially the basilica. This is the land of the Cathars, an 11th C religious group declared heretical by the Roman church and subject to the Inquisition. Lots of history in the Languedoc, more than I can take in. We took the slow road home, across the mountains of the Haut-Languedoc; beautiful country, small towns and long vistas. All in all, another thought provoking day.

  1. Very cool. And not just the idea of millenia of wine making; the Cathar 'heresy,' too. All that history. Or someone's story, anyway.
